Utah Auto Insurance Coverage Guide

General Information

Utah’s Minimum Car Insurance Coverage
  • Bodily Injury Liability: $25,000 per person and $65,000 per accident+
  • Property Damage Liability: $15,000 per accident+
  • Personal Injury Protection: $3,000 per accident#
  • Uninsured Motorist: $25,000 per person and $65,000 per accident*
  • Underinsured Motorist: $25,000 per person and $65,000 per accident*

+Liability coverage through each policy has a minimum requirement based on your state of residence. You can choose your level of coverage. However, with lower coverage, you have lower premiums but this provides less protection in the case of a severe accident. Higher coverage will give you much greater financial protection but may not fit within your budget.

*Utah law does not require you to purchase uninsured motorists or underinsured motorist coverage. However, if you do purchase such coverage, Utah law requires that you buy at least $25,000 per person or $65,000 per accident.

All Utah drivers must carry proof of auto insurance and present it to any law enforcement officer upon request.

#Personal Injury Protection comes with every auto insurance policy in Utah regardless of coverages. As long as you have auto insurance, PIP is available to you.

Overall with insurance policies, your premium can be affected by the type of vehicle you are driving, the area you live in, your driving record, your age, and marital status, as well as other factors.

Utah has the following insurance companies: Auto-Owners, Bear River Mutual, CSE Insurance, Farmers, Geico, Hartford/AARP, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, Progressive, SafeCo, State Farm, Travelers and USAA. Each insurance company has its own terms and conditions for coverages and discounts defined below.

USAA

Standard Coverage
Collision

Collision covers damage from an accident or rollover.

Comprehensive

Comprehensive pays for damage to your car resulting from an incident other than a collision or rollover. This includes damages due to theft, fire, vandalism, flooding, and hail.

Liability and Other Coverage

A combination of coverage options such as bodily injury, property damage, and uninsured motorist coverage. Generally, the coverage must be the same for all vehicles. Liability insurance includes bodily injury and property damage. Bodily injury provides protection if you are found legally responsible for the injury or death of another person resulting from a car accident. Property damage pays to repair the accident damage done to another person’s property.

Personal Injury Protection

The minimum for Utah is $3,000, however, you can purchase a higher coverage limit. This protection helps pay for immediate care after a car accident.

Extended Benefits

Extended benefits provide a specific death benefit, may cover wage loss and disability losses.

Uninsured Motorist Bodily injury

Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage pays for injuries to you and your passengers from an accident caused by a driver that has no insurance and protects you from a hit-and-run driver. The amount you choose for each vehicle on your policy must match.

Add-on Coverage
Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance covers the cost of a tow, or repair your vehicle if your vehicle won’t run. It also includes services to unlock your vehicle, deliver gas, or change a tire.

Rental Reimbursement

Rental reimbursement is an optional feature that pays the cost of a rental car (up to the class you choose) while your vehicle is being repaired due to a covered insurance claim.

Accident Forgiveness

Remain accident-free for five years at USAA and your premium won’t go up after one at-fault accident. In some states, you may be able to purchase this feature.
